Challenge Talk co-host, adventure seeker, geo-mentor, and a true ambassador for geocaching who will be deeply missed.
Some people find geocaches. Others help people discover just how much adventure, friendship, and possibility can be hidden behind a set of coordinates. Tim did both.
Known throughout the geocaching community as Merlin1392, Tim began caching in 2006 and built a remarkable life in the game—one challenge, one road trip, one dive, and one “just one more” at a time. To those of us at the Geocache Talk Network, he was a valued co-host of Challenge Talk, where his experience, curiosity, humor, and unmistakable enthusiasm made every conversation better.
Challenge caching fit Tim perfectly. A difficult qualification was never simply an obstacle; it was an invitation to plan another outing, visit another place, and find a little more Tupperware in the woods. His familiar rallying cry said it all: “Challenge Accepted!”
Tim’s adventures went far beyond the trail. Dive-caching became a second love, and his underwater adventure at The Deep Dam Cache with Derek Baker remained one of his favorites. He showed all of us that geocaching can lead almost anywhere—even below the surface.

If Tim had not qualified yet, the path to qualification simply became the next adventure.

Beyond the Ordinary
From gadget caches and ambitious routes to dive-caching, Tim embraced every side of the game.
Tim told me once, “My fondest saying about this game is, ‘the places we go, the things we see, and the people we meet.’”
In a lot of ways, he really made “the people we meet” extra special for so many of us.

Tim’s impact cannot be measured only in finds, hides, statistics, or completed challenges. It lives in the people he encouraged, the trips he inspired, the knowledge he shared, and the friendships strengthened along the way.
Tim’s passing leaves a space in our community that cannot be filled. We are profoundly grateful that he shared his friendship, knowledge, humor, and adventures with Challenge Talk and the entire Geocache Talk Network family. He will be remembered with great affection, and he will be deeply missed.
Every time someone signs a challenge before qualifying, plans an ambitious caching trip, helps a newer cacher, or says “just one more,” a little of the spirit of Merlin1392 will continue down the trail.
